Pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn.) had been detected to have many pharmacological activities. It has been reported that pomegranate juice is an important source of high levels of phytoconstituents which have many nutritional and health advantages. This study evaluated the possible effect of pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn.) peel ethyl acetate extract (PGE) on blood pressure and heart rate at dose of 400 mg/kg/day on fludrocortisones induced hypertension Wister rats. Vascular reactivity experiments were performed in segments of aorta from normotensive rats, hypertensive control rats and hypertensive rats those were treated with PGE (Fig. 1). Treatment with PGE significantly reduced the blood pressure of fludrocortisones salt-treated hypertensive rats however it did not alter the mean blood pressure and heart rate in normotensive rats. The contractile responses to noradrenalin in isolated aortic strip from hypertensive rats treated with PGE were significantly reduced. The active compound that was responsible for this effect was isolated and it will be identified in near future.
